Philippe Halsman - Jake Royce

Philippe Halsman's work is emphasized by his elaborate portraits of prominent individuals and celebrities. In this portrait, Halsman captures a peculiar scene of Salvador Dali jumping, while three black cats whirl through the air trying to avoid the oncoming water and a floating chair. This photo stood out to me for a couple of reasons. I found it odd that every object in this portrait are suspended. Furthermore, the layout of the portrait draws your eyes to multiple parts of the portrait. There are no clear line or 2/3 ratios, leading your eye to wander the portrait and ponder what exactly is happening. I also found it interesting the stark contrast between the darker objects in the for-front of the picture and the white backdrop. In this photo, it seems that Halsman is using a normal 35 millimeter lens. Overall, I find this picture incredibly puzzling, yet really really intriguing and left me wondering Halsman's purpose and intended message.
