Magnum Photo

This photo is by Steve McCurry, an American photographer. I found this photo to be extremely interesting because it portrays action, yet the focus is not on the moving figure. McCurry makes the viewer almost want to follow the boy to see where he is going. We can presume that the boy is in an area where kids usually congregate, based on the small painted hand-prints on the wall. However, there is a contrast between the innocence and playfulness of the hand-prints, and the deterioration of the walls. The viewer might believe that this was taken in a bad neighborhood, and the boy is trying to escape poverty or abuse. On the other hand, we might think that the boy is off to play with his friends and is happy. The photo opens up a lot of personal interpretation for the viewer and this is why I like it. I would image the photographer used a wide-angle lens and put the focus on the wall, while leaning up against it. I love the coloring and the positioning as well.
