about photography
At this point in the course (even though it’s after only three lessons),
I would really like it if you would begin to think about positive
materials, on paper, or negative, on film, like the small sculptures
made of light. Small transparent works created by a real PHYSICAL
action. Unique and unrepeatable works, which have sprung out of a
certain randomness. If you understand and can make your own this concept, then the course will be very stimulating and expressive.

Magnum Photo
This photo is by Steve McCurry, an American photographer. I found this photo to be extremely interesting because it portrays action, yet the focus is not on the moving figure. McCurry makes the viewer almost want to follow the boy to see where he is going. We can presume that the boy is in an area where kids usually congregate, based on the small painted hand-prints on the wall. However, there is a contrast between the innocence and playfulness of the hand-prints, and the deterioration of the walls. The viewer might believe that this was taken in a bad neighborhood, and the boy is trying to escape poverty or abuse. On the other hand, we might think that the boy is off to play with his friends and is happy. The photo opens up a lot of personal interpretation for the viewer and this is why I like it. I would image the photographer used a wide-angle lens and put the focus on the wall, while leaning up against it. I love the coloring and the positioning as well.
Nikos Economopoulos--Gabriela Fernandez
Nikos Economopoulos is a Greek photographer. His photographs carry a certain sense of geometric composition, often times outlining certain symmetrical patterns. He claims to photograph and document much of what he calls the "Balkan Man," in an effort to capture various identities and their differences. His photographs on Magnum Photography are incredibly interesting, and seem to focus on people living in impoverished conditions.
The picture above shows a variety of children hanging at different levels from a fence. They seem to be playing with each other, probably imagining a game of some sort. This image brought me back to a time when I would go to Mexico as a child and play games with my friends. I love the way their bodies have been captured in the shadows as well, and how much movement and "flow" you can still see in this picture.

Raymond Depardon || Kristen Fuller
This Raymond Depardon photography captured my attention because of it's basic, very geometric composition. There are two open windows that look out to a city on a beach. But this image captures the windows on both sides of the house as wells as the view of the city close up and far away. There are very distinct lines dividing this photo which I found as a very common trait in Depardon's photographs.
Caj Bremer- Emilia
The photographer I chose was attracted by the tradition of
humanistic photography, so his emphasis and interest usually involve people and
their surroundings. The beauty of his work strikes me in the fact that he is
able to turn everyday realities into masterpieces.
Bremer’s skill is also notable, as he is able to control the
light and composition in conditions that rapidly change. In this picture it is
possible to note the very strong gridline in the middle of the picture that
runs both horizontally and vertically, diving the picture into four squares.
